Lincoln Hills 15th Annual Fine Arts Show & Sale
Eight of our fellow friends and members have 32 fine art images being exhibited in the Lincoln Hills 15th Annual Fine Arts Show & Sale. The show was held in the Orchard Creek Ballroom on February 3rd and 4th.
The members who have entered a total 32 images are: Allen Adler, Bob Baikauskas, Bob Dale, Truman Holtzclaw, Michael Johnson, Patrick Jewell and Bill Szabo.
Congratulations go out to Bob Baikauskas who received a first place award and Truman Holtzclaw who received a second place award. Considering the caliber of the works on display, those are very impressive accomplishments! In addition, several of our exhibitors successfully sold their works.
January General Meeting Featured a presentation from Action Camera on Mirrorless Cameras
Truman Holtzclaw turns over the microphone to Action Camera's Rebecca Cody
Rebecca Cody, Sales Associate at Action Camera, presented a comparison between mirrorless and DSLR cameras.
DSLRs have been around a very long time. A mirror reflects light up to a prism and into the viewfinder. When the shutter button is pressed, the mirror flips up, the shutter opens and the image sensor captures the image.
A mirrorless camera has a simpler light path. After the light passes through the lens, it falls on the image sensor, which captures a preview of the image. Pressing the shutter button captures the image. The mirrorless camera body can be of simpler construction and smaller.
Rebecca favored Sony mirrorless cameras as having the most advanced features, the most important being stabilization, focus ability, and usability. She regarded the most serious disadvantage as battery life, although with recent models, this has been improved.
During the presentation, Jeff Hanner recorded a video and you can find it in our video archive - click HERE
LHPC Board Approves Implementation of Learning Initiative
The First Session Was on January 14 2018 in the Multipurpose Room at 9:00 a.m.
We announced last month that the LHPC Board approved a Learning Initiative. We had our first meeting on January 14 and Truman discussed lighting and its importance to photography. The room was packed and the presentation well received.
Rather than targeting an equipment group, ie: point and shoot cameras, the Learning Initiative will be structured by topic and technique which should benefit each equipment group at least some of the time. Topic examples may include street photography, vacation photography and night photography; while technique examples include composition, ISO, shutter speed, selective focus, etc.
The next Learning session will be February 20 in the Multipurpose Room starting at 9:00 a.m. The topic will be composition -- what are the rules and how to break them.

Next Enhancement SIG Meeting - Wednesday February 7th 2018
Enhancement SIG Image Processing/Interpretive Challenge
will resume in March 2018.
Image Processed by Truman Holtzclaw
The next meeting of the Photo Enhancement SIG will be open discussion. There have been some updates to a couple of photo editing programs we can discuss. If you are new to photo editing and have questions this would be a good meeting to attend. It would also be a good meeting to attend if you have a photo that you would like help editing. Bring it on a flash drive and our resident experts will help.
As always you can bring some photos on a flash drive and present them to the group. If so be sure and include the before version of the photo. We can also talk about any new gear we got for Christmas.
I hope to see you there.
More details about this challenge can be found
CANCELLED: Yosemite Field Trip
Scheduled for February 20, 21 and 22, 2018
Cancelled because there is no snow on the valley floor and the Firefall is dry
We did this trip in 2016 with fantastic results. Yosemite is always a magical place and winters can be the best for photography and avoiding the massive crowds of summer.
One of our destinations is the natural Firefall phenomena that illuminates Yosemite’s Horsetail Falls every February. In addition to this spectacular event, The National Park is rich with photo opportunities ranging from well known locations like El Capitan and Half Dome to lesser known landmarks.
We even know the 14 secret locations touted by highly paid guides!
HOWEVER, although Yosemite is always awesome, the photo conditions are just average at this time.
We don't want to spend our time on "average" but save it for "great".

Volunteers Needed for Video Production
The Association’s Video Services Group (“VSG”), a sub-group within the Communications and Community Relations Committee, is seeking volunteers to assist with producing a variety of different types of video pieces. These videos are almost all intended for posting to our Association’s YouTube channel to be viewed by residents.
VSG is particularly interested in hearing from residents who have experience in all aspects of video creation. We want to hear from YOU if you would like to become involved with the planning, directing, camera operating, video editing, audio engineering, and/or assisting more experienced members of the group. If any of the foregoing piques your interest, please contact Peter Beckett via e-mail at videography@sclhca.com.

Ed Rotberg Shares his Passion for Photography at our February Meeting
Ed Rotberg
We are delighted to welcome Ed Rotberg as our February guest speaker. Ed is an avid photographer, and has been since 1972. He made the switch from film to ‘digital and Photoshop’ in 2003.
While Ed photographs everything from architecture and street scenes, to portraits and landscapes, his real passion is photographing wildlife and nature, especially birds. He and his wife have greatly enjoyed combining photography with their travels throughout the United States and to such places as Australia, Ireland, Scotland, Costa Rica, Tanzania and Namibia.
His work has appeared in galleries and books, and his work has been featured both inside and on the cover of Monterey Bay Aquarium’s Shoreline Magazine and the cover of their current Visitor’s Guide.

You may think you are doing everything right when it comes to backups but are you? Check out this blog post and then you can make an informed decision on whether to keep doing it the way you are doing it or switch to a different and hopefully better way.
