Next Enhancement SIG Meeting - February 5th, 2020

Here are your images for the February Image "Compositing" Challenge.

Here's a chance to test your image "compositing" skills by combining content from three or four different images to create a new image.

For February the challenge is to create a in image of the Moon Setting over Lone Pine Mountain and/or Mt. Whitney and the Eastern Sierra Mountain Range as viewed from the Alabama Hills.

Below are four unprocessed images (as they came out of the camera).  They are:

  1. Photo of Lone Pine Mtn. and Mt. Whitney

  2. Photo of sky with magenta colored clouds

  3. High Rez photo of moon

  4. Star field

A composited image would show  the moon setting above the mountain range and blended into the sky.  Depending on the lighting you want to create for the scene, you may even want to add a few stars appearing in the sky.

Use your creativity.  You can make the tops of the mountains brighter to reflect sunlight touching the peaks, and the moon more evenly balanced (from a brightness perspective) in the sky.

Or, you can make a darker interpretation with a blue hour light cast and the moon appearing as a bright beacon in the sky.

Here's the fun part... you don't even have to use the provided sky if you have one of your own that you prefer to use.  If you want to get fanciful and move into the fantasy realm you can use the images to create an alien world with one of your galaxy images with or without the moon.

No rules, except that the base image of Lone Pine Mtn. & Mt. Whitney MUST be used. You can turn it into a work of art such as a painting, a sketch, a cartoon, an abstract or you can just make it a better photo. It's up to you. Feel free to let your creativity and imagination run wild or show off your skills at creating a great photo using your favorite post processing software.

We will review the images during the February 5th Enhancement SIG to learn about processing techniques and to learn how others think and see.

The images are in the png file format which supports lossless compression of the RAW camera file, and can be edited by virtually all of the photo editing software programs used by club members.

To download your chosen image simply "Mouse Over" the image where you will see a Download Icon in the bottom right side of the image.  Clicking on the Icon will spawn a new page with the image displayed at full resolution.  Right Click the image and it will download to your default download folder on your computer.

It is recommended that you save your processed image at full resolution for the SIG meeting.

We will showcase the processed images at the February 5th Enhancement  SIG Meeting!

If you are using Photoshop you might want to try using the "Blend If" option which can be accessed from the top Menu by clicking on:  Layers > Layers Style > Blending Options > Then use the Blend If controls.

Robert Thomas who runs www.photoblogstop.com has an outstanding description on how to use the luminosity blending mode to add a moon (or stars) to an image.

You can see the video presentation on You Tube at:

You can read his tutorial at:

Or, you can download a pdf file of the tutorial   HERE

If you are using On1, Luminar, or some other Photo Processing Software check to see if it provides a similar feature to the Blend If option, it very well may.

We will review the images in the Online Sig or at our next in-person meeting.
