Bowling Ball Beach

In Mendocino County, California, three miles south of Point Arena on Highway One is an unusual beach, called Bowling Ball Beach.

It’s just north of Schooner Gulch State Beach and has dozens of large spherical balls about 3 feet in diameter.

High tide will cover them, so look at a tide table and time your visit an hour or so after low tide. If you’re lucky you can pick a late afternoon low tide and see the sunset behind them. In all our visits to this beach, we have never seen the sunset.

Park on the west side of Highway one and take the well-worn path towards the ocean. The last steps to the beach have been washed out from some winter storms so climbing down – and especially back up will be a challenge.
